When it comes to the subject of software solutions, you may think you would be hard pushed to find a more boring subject. However, software solutions are a subject that affect each and every one of us. That’s because of the technological age that we live in. The world is accessible to all from the comfort of your own living room. Unfortunately, it is also accessible to terrorists and money launderers through the same medium – the internet.
The majority of business these days is carried out over the internet and all worthy websites will have security measures in place to ensure that any personal or bank details do not make it into the wrong hands. That said, hackers are constantly working on this and software solutions have to be put in place by financial institutions to continually monitor and overcome this.
Money laundering is an aspect of criminal life that is made easier via the internet but it is also traceable with software solutions through the same channels. Suspicious behaviour can be monitored investigations can be carried out without the watched parties having any inkling that someone is on to them.
It is also possible through various software solution programmes, to monitor the activities of suspected terrorists. Investigators have the power to infiltrate suspects communications that are carried out over the airwaves through telecommunications and via electronic communications over the internet. The fight against terrorism, as we know, is an ongoing fight and not something the authorities can afford to slack off from.
Through tip offs and intelligence, the security services will be made aware of the possible terrorists. They then gain access to their communications, monitoring what websites are visited eg. bomb making sites, flight instructions, training camps. They can then decide what appropriate action to take and without the software solutions that allow them to do this we would all be put at more risk.
There are some individuals and organisations that take offence at the idea of our private communications being viewed by others but with nothing to hide, what does it matter? For those not involved with any untoward organisations, for those who are no threat to the state, it is unlikely that there are enough resources or interest to allow the average Joe to be spied on in such a way.
These methods are purely for our protection and I doubt there are many people that would like to pass that up when you look at the activities of terrorists throughout the world these days and if we all have to put up with a reduced amount of privacy by the authorities that lead us to avoiding another incidence like 9/11, then why would we complain?
Unfortunately, this is one of those times where we all want the convenience of modern life but it has its drawbacks. We cannot expect that the internet will make everything accessible to all except the nasty people.
For the cost of a little privacy, the authorities are in a position to make us all a lot safer, and they do so. For those who wish to make more fuss about this than necessary, then it is their prerogative to abstain from using such an open form of communication.
Security expert Catherine Harvey looks at how security services use software solutions in order to keep track of terrorist activities.
